Steve Clarke Quits Scotland, Waives Six-Figure Compensation

Steve Clarke resigned as Scotland manager immediately after the team's World Cup elimination, forgoing a six-figure compensation package from a new four-year contract he had signed with the Scottish Football Association (SFA) only four weeks prior.

Resignation After World Cup Exit

The 62-year-old stepped down on Saturday night following Scotland's 3-0 defeat to Brazil in Miami, which confirmed their group-stage exit. The squad was informed of Clarke's decision at a meeting at the team hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina, after other group results sealed Scotland's fate.

Scotland had earned three points from an opening win against Haiti in Boston, but a 1-0 loss to Morocco left them needing a result against Brazil. The Brazilians dominated, ending Scotland's hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.

Waiving Compensation

SFA sources confirmed that Clarke waived any compensation due under his contract. The decision saved the SFA a significant six-figure sum. SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell stated, “I spoke to him yesterday (Saturday) and he’d made the decision that he wanted to step down. That’s ultimately his decision and I can understand why. We’ve not performed as well as we wanted to. But ultimately it’s up to Steve and he’s been incredible. He’s been fantastic for us and the last thing I would want is his reputation or legacy to be tarnished.”

Clarke's Legacy

Clarke took charge seven years ago with the goal of returning Scotland to major tournaments. He succeeded by qualifying for Euro 2020, Euro 2024, and the 2026 World Cup. He holds the record for most games managed by a Scotland boss and is considered the country's most successful manager.

In an open letter to fans, Clarke wrote, “The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now.”

Successor Search

The SFA has begun the search for a new manager. Early favorites among bookmakers include David Moyes, Ange Postecoglou, and Clarke's assistant Steven Naismith.
