Calvin Miller backs John McGlynn as next Scotland manager
Miller backs McGlynn as Scotland manager

Hearts winger Calvin Miller has thrown his support behind Falkirk manager John McGlynn as the ideal candidate to replace Steve Clarke as Scotland head coach. Miller, who played under McGlynn at Falkirk, believes the 62-year-old would bring a more expansive and exciting style of football that could reinvigorate the national team after a disappointing World Cup campaign.

McGlynn's credentials

McGlynn has been touted as one of the domestic contenders to take over from Clarke, who stepped down after Scotland failed to progress past the group stage at the World Cup, scoring only one goal in a 1-0 win over Haiti. Under McGlynn, Falkirk achieved back-to-back promotions and finished in the top six of the Scottish Premiership in their first season back in the top flight last term.

Miller highlighted McGlynn's tactical approach, stating: "John is a bit more open and expansive. It's a different brand of football, I think that's what most fans, even just looking at the World Cup in Scotland, they'll all want a bit different brand of football. They want a bit more positivity and John McGlynn can definitely bring that."

Succession plans

The Scottish Football Association is now formulating a succession plan for the Euro 2028 qualifying campaign, where Scotland will co-host the tournament. Other names linked with the role include Ange Postecoglou, but he recently signed a lucrative deal with Al-Nassr. David Moyes remains a popular choice but is unlikely to leave Everton at this stage.

McGlynn, a former Hearts boss, is considered one of the top-performing homegrown managers in Scotland. Miller, who was tipped for a World Cup call-up but overlooked by Clarke, joked that McGlynn's appointment could boost his own international prospects. "From a selfish point of view for myself, I could have a better chance than I did last year. If he got it, he'd be getting a text straight away," Miller said.

Miller's endorsement

Despite his personal interest, Miller emphasized that McGlynn's suitability goes beyond their relationship. "I don't want to make it any more difficult for him, but he could be great for the job, not just for me but just his ideas and where he's at in the club, so I think that would be a good one," he added.
