Liverpool are being urged to strengthen their midfield this summer, with club legend Phil Thompson suggesting they could use a player like World Cup hero John McGinn. The Aston Villa captain scored the only goal as Scotland beat Haiti 1-0, securing the nation's first World Cup victory in 36 years.
McGinn's Stellar Form
The 31-year-old has been in outstanding form, having earlier scored a brilliant goal to help Villa beat Liverpool 4-2, securing Champions League qualification. He also played a key role in Villa's Europa League final win over Freiburg, the club's first major trophy in 30 years.
Roy Keane's Controversial Comments
Despite his success, McGinn was branded a "pub player" by former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane on The Overlap. Keane said: "He's done brilliant. But when he has his bad days, he looks like a pub player. When he's off, he looks shocking." He added: "You'd have him in your group, absolutely, and it's no surprise Villa are doing well." The comments sparked criticism from Scotland and Villa fans.
Thompson's Verdict
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Thompson said: "John McGinn is a player everyone needs. Liverpool don't have a McGinn in their midfield; someone who demands from others and can give away a needless free-kick as if to say 'I'm here'. Liverpool don't have a Jordan Henderson or a James Milner anymore." He called Keane's remarks "very harsh," noting Keane's own strengths in influencing games through passion and commitment.
While a move for McGinn seems unlikely this summer, the midfielder was once on Liverpool's radar under Jurgen Klopp. Thompson's comments highlight the Reds' need for a leader in midfield.
