Finals day at the Wuhan Open and the Shanghai Masters sees Britain's Sonay Kartal bid for the biggest title of her career. The world No. 170 has already become the lowest-ranked woman to reach a WTA 1000 / Tier I final since 1990 and now aims to go one better by lifting the trophy.
Kartal's Remarkable Run
Kartal returned from a six-month injury layoff just 26 days ago and has reached the final by defeating Elina Svitolina and Jelena Ostapenko. She faces Maja Chwalinska, the 16th seed who reached the French Open final as a qualifier this spring.
The Brit has dropped to No. 170 in the world after her back injury. She is set to return to the top 50 after this week and could reach the top 40 with the title. Kartal is the first Brit to reach a WTA 1000 final since Johanna Konta in 2019. The singles final begins at 11.30am UK time / 6.30pm local time.
All-Spanish Affair in Shanghai
In Shanghai, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina takes on Rafael Jodar in an all-Spanish final. Davidovich Fokina recently returned from a back injury and has already won a title in Chengdu since coming back last month.
Jodar, 20, is playing his first full season on the tour. If he lifts his first Masters 1000 title, he will crack the top 10, having started the year outside the top 100.
Champions Crowned and Early Season Ends
Austrian duo Lucas Miedler and Neil Oberleitner won the Shanghai Masters doubles title with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Francisco Cabral and JJ Tracy. It was their first Masters 1000 title as a pair, having revived their partnership at the start of the Asian swing. Before now, they last competed together in 2020 on the ITF circuit, barring Davis Cup ties.
Elsewhere, Joao Fonseca and Eva Lys have joined Jannik Sinner in ending their seasons early. Neither will compete again until 2027. For Fonseca, this means he cannot defend his Swiss Indoors title in Basel.
