Jordan Henderson World Cup Over After Wrist Surgery
Jordan Henderson World Cup Over After Wrist Injury Surgery

Jordan Henderson's World Cup is over after it was revealed he needs surgery on a freak wrist injury sustained during England's celebration at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico.

Injury During Celebration

Thomas Tuchel's side won 3-2 against Mexico in the early hours of Monday morning, despite playing over 40 minutes with 10 men after Jarell Quansah was sent off. After surviving 11 minutes of stoppage time to book a quarter-final place, England were celebrating with fans when Henderson slipped attempting to jump over an advertising board. He landed awkwardly and received immediate treatment.

Newcastle United's Dan Burn quickly ushered Henderson over, and medical staff attended to him. He needed a stretcher and oxygen to leave the pitch. Henderson now requires surgery, ending his World Cup campaign.

Tuchel and Bellingham React

Tuchel admitted the issue looked serious in his post-match press conference, calling it a dampener on a famous night. He said: "It's not good, not good, Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist, it looks really bad. He injured his wrist, he's gone to hospital it's quite a serious injury. It doesn't fit with the night. I don't know if there will be a procedure. I’m sad because Jordan injured his wrist."

Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham, who scored the first two goals, added: "He is in a bit of bother, but our medical team have everything under control. I’m not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him."

England's Quarter-Final Opponent

England will now meet Norway for a place in the semi-finals, but will have to do so without the former Liverpool captain.
