Jordan Henderson Breaks Silence After Freak Wrist Injury Ends World Cup
Jordan Henderson Breaks Silence After Freak Wrist Injury

Jordan Henderson has spoken out after suffering a broken wrist in a freak accident that will sideline him for the remainder of the World Cup. The 36-year-old England international was injured following the final whistle of England's 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, when he tumbled awkwardly while trying to scale advertising hoardings to celebrate with away supporters.

Henderson's Injury and Surgery

The Brentford star was stretchered off the pitch, required oxygen, and was taken to hospital. On Monday, it was confirmed he needed surgery and will miss the rest of the tournament. This could be Henderson's final World Cup, widely considered his swansong.

Despite the severity, Henderson posted a positive message on social media: 'A night to remember that's for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.'

Team Support and Recovery

England teammates quickly showed support. Vice-captain Declan Rice commented 'Some man,' while Morgan Rogers added 'What a guy.' Elliot Anderson and Djed Spence also sent heart emojis. Henderson remains in contact with the squad and is eager to offer backing from the sidelines.

England defender Guehi provided an update on Henderson's condition, telling the FA's Lions' Den show: 'Hendo's good, man. Hendo's in a better place than he was yesterday, and it was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to speedy recovery.'

Henderson's World Cup Legacy

Henderson earned his 90th England cap as a substitute against Panama in the group stage. He is the only England men's player to appear at four World Cup tournaments. Manager Thomas Tuchel selected him for his experience and dressing-room influence, despite opposition.

Whether Henderson will rejoin the squad for the quarter-final against Norway on Saturday remains unclear. Speaking in June about his role, he said: 'It's the same as always, to be the best version of myself, to be ready to help the team on and off the pitch and give absolutely everything to help this team be successful.'

He added: 'The last few years has been a bit of a roller coaster, to say the least, but I've worked very hard to be in this position and made a lot of sacrifices, and I'm just very grateful and honoured to be here. It's about giving absolutely everything to make the nation back home very proud of us.'
