Ecuador manager Sebastian Beccacece has confirmed his departure after his side's 2-0 World Cup round of 32 defeat to Mexico, following a formal complaint submitted by the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) to FIFA regarding off-field incidents before the match.
Beccacece steps down after contract expires
Beccacece, who took charge in 2024, saw his contract end with Ecuador's World Cup campaign. The 45-year-old admitted he fell short of his promise to make it the best World Cup ever for the nation. 'Our contract ended with the World Cup. I don't think we were able to achieve the feat we promised: to make this the best World Cup ever. Today it's my turn to say goodbye,' Beccacece said, according to Reuters. He added, 'I have gratitude - gratitude for the people, gratitude for the players who gave their hearts.'
Ecuador's World Cup campaign ends in last 32
Ecuador lost 2-0 to tournament hosts Mexico in the round of 32, with Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez scoring first-half goals. Piero Hincapie was sent off in the 95th minute. Ecuador had qualified by finishing second in the South American group, ahead of Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay, conceding only five goals in 18 qualifiers. They advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams after defeating Germany in their final group match.
FIFA complaint over off-field incidents
The FEF submitted a formal complaint to FIFA regarding incidents before the Mexico match. Fans created a late-night disturbance outside Ecuador's hotel in Mexico City, setting off fireworks directed at the building. Beccacece also revealed that the squad arrived at their accommodation three hours and 20 minutes late due to unexplained delays with their flight and transport. The FEF statement said: 'Regarding certain off-the-field actions that took place prior to the Round of 16 match, the Ecuadorian Football Federation informs that it has submitted a formal complaint to the organisers, as this conduct is far removed from the principles of fair play, equity, and unity that a FIFA World Cup should represent.' The statement called on authorities to safeguard the integrity of players, coaching staff, and supporters.
Beccacece reflects on his tenure
Beccacece, who previously managed Elche, Defensa y Justicia, and Racing Club, expressed gratitude for his time with Ecuador. 'This has been a painful evening but I leave with good memories of the dressing room tonight. After the match, talking with the boys... they were two beautiful hours. We built a family. We didn't achieve what I said we would, but I feel complete. I know what we built,' he said.
