Sebastian Beccacece has resigned as Ecuador's head coach immediately following his team's 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the World Cup round of 32. The match, played in Mexico City, marked the end of Beccacece's tenure, as he confirmed his departure in a post-match press conference.
Beccacece Announces Departure
“Our contract ended with the World Cup. I don’t think we were able to achieve the feat we promised: to make this the best World Cup ever. Today it’s my turn to say goodbye,” Beccacece said, according to Reuters. His decision comes after Ecuador's elimination, which also prompted a formal complaint to FIFA regarding pre-match treatment.
Pre-Match Disruptions Spark Complaint
The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) submitted a complaint to FIFA over incidents before the match. Supporters caused a late-night disturbance outside Ecuador's hotel in Mexico City, setting off fireworks aimed at the building. Players were seen peeking through curtains as the disruption continued into the early hours. Beccacece also revealed that the team arrived at their hotel three hours and 20 minutes late due to unexplained delays with their flight and coach.
The FEF statement read: "Regarding certain off-the-field actions that took place prior to the Round of 16 match, the Ecuadorian Football Federation informs that it has submitted a formal complaint to the organisers, as this conduct is far removed from the principles of fair play, equity, and unity that a FIFA World Cup should represent."
Call for Action
The federation urged authorities to address the incidents: "We trust that these unsportsmanlike actions will not overshadow the football celebration that unites two brotherly nations, and that respect, healthy competition, and fair play—which give meaning to a World Cup—will prevail at all times. Ecuador will always respond to these unsportsmanlike actions on the field."
