Cristiano Ronaldo has dismissed speculation about his international retirement, insisting he will not make a decision until after Portugal's World Cup campaign ends. The 41-year-old forward scored in Portugal's win over Croatia but was later substituted, sparking rumours after his sister suggested the match might be his last for the national team.
Ronaldo's Post-Match Comments
Speaking after receiving the Superior Player of the Match award, Ronaldo told reporters: "It is not important now. I will have time to talk about that after winning or losing the tournament; I will talk to my family and then I will make the most appropriate decision." He added: "I no longer make decisions in the heat of the moment; now everything is done calmly. All that matters to me at the moment is enjoying the present and helping the national team."
Sister's Bombshell Claim
Before the match, Ronaldo's sister, Katie Aveiro, told Portuguese broadcaster SportTV: "From the information I have, they can say goodbye. Enjoy it while it lasts. It's not today that they're saying goodbye, but it's soon. I believe this is their farewell." She added: "The information I have, from a reliable source, I believe this is his last dance."
Match Details and Aftermath
Portugal edged past Croatia with a late strike from Goncalo Ramos, after Josko Gvardiol's goal was ruled out by VAR. Ronaldo watched from the bench after being substituted but joined emotional celebrations, honouring Diogo Jota. Portugal now prepares to face Spain in the next round.
Tribute to Luka Modric
Ronaldo also paid tribute to former teammate Luka Modric, whose Croatia exit likely ends his World Cup career. "Yes, I said goodbye to him. He remains a legend in the world of football, and we are close in age. I have great respect for Modrić for what he represents in the world of football," Ronaldo said.
