The Netherlands' World Cup group-stage match against Tunisia was temporarily stopped at the start of the second half because Tunisia fielded only 10 players, prompting an angry reaction from Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman and BBC commentators.
Match Halted Due to Missing Player
As the second half was about to begin, Tunisia's players signalled to referee Katia Garcia that they were one man short. Midfielder Ellyes Skhiri had not yet returned to the pitch, causing a delay of nearly two minutes before he eventually emerged. The countdown to kick-off had already elapsed by that point.
Netherlands manager Koeman was visibly furious on the touchline, venting his frustration to fourth official Juan Gabriel Benítez and the Tunisia bench.
BBC Pundits React
BBC commentator Steve Wilson said: "We have to pause, Tunisia are a man light, so the countdown was a bit early. And the Tunisia player at the back was desperately trying to draw the referee's attention to the fact they only had 10 players out there."
Co-commentator Stephen Warnock responded: "How?!" Wilson replied: "I don't know." Warnock then fumed: "It's incredible. You know that the clock is going down and you've got to be out quicker. Ronald Koeman is furious and rightly so, he's saying, 'How is this happening? It's unacceptable'."
Match Summary and Group Outcome
The Netherlands took a 2-0 lead in the first half, with Skhiri scoring an own goal and Brina Brobbey doubling the advantage after just seven minutes. Tunisia pulled one back through Hazem Mastouri nine minutes into the second half, but Jan Paul van Hecke restored the two-goal cushion eight minutes later. The Netherlands won 3-1.
Elsewhere, Japan drew 1-1 with Sweden, meaning the Netherlands finished top of Group F and will face Morocco in the round of 32 on Tuesday.
