Arne Slot is reportedly in talks to become the next manager of the Netherlands national team, according to Sky Germany. The former Liverpool head coach has been out of work since being dismissed on May 30, just over a year after winning the Premier League title.
Slot's Liverpool Tenure Ends After Turbulent Second Season
Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp at Anfield in 2024 on a three-year deal and enjoyed a remarkable first campaign, achieving the highest win rate of any manager in the club's history. His side clinched the Premier League title with four games to spare, finishing 10 points clear at the top. However, a heavy summer spending spree of around £440 million, offset by roughly £200 million in sales, altered the squad dynamic. The tragic passing of Diogo Jota in July 2025 also had a profound impact on the team.
In his second season, Liverpool lost 20 matches across all competitions, including 12 in the Premier League, and only secured a fifth-place finish on the final day, qualifying for the Champions League by a narrow margin. Sporting director Richard Hughes conducted an end-of-season review and concluded that Slot faced too many challenges to restore the club's winning form. Slot was sacked days before Andoni Iraola was appointed as his successor on a two-year deal.
Netherlands Job Opens After World Cup Exit
The Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco in the World Cup round of 32 on penalties last week, leading to Ronald Koeman's resignation. Slot is now negotiating to take over as Oranje coach. An international return would make Slot the second former Liverpool boss to become a national team head coach, with Klopp also in talks to succeed Julian Nagelsmann as Germany manager after Germany's World Cup exit.
Klopp, who currently works as Red Bull's head of global soccer, confirmed negotiations with the German FA (DFB). Speaking to Magenta TV, he said: "Yes, I can confirm the talks. Things moved pretty quickly. Julian stepped down. The DFB are looking for a successor. And they're talking to me." Klopp added that he has an existing contract with Red Bull but is interested in the role, noting that discussions would be intensive and that he expects Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff will not stand in his way.
Slot's Future and Potential Challenges
Slot had been linked with Fulham after Marco Silva's departure, but those links faded in early June. He has been on holiday with his family since leaving Liverpool. If appointed, Slot would face the task of revitalising a Netherlands side that underperformed at the World Cup. His previous success at Feyenoord, where he won the Eredivisie title, and his brief but triumphant spell at Liverpool make him a strong candidate.
