FIFA President Gianni Infantino has revealed that US President Donald Trump has not attended any World Cup matches so far because he has been preoccupied with other matters. Speaking ahead of the final, Infantino dismissed suggestions that Trump's absence was unusual, stating that the president's schedule is demanding.
Infantino Explains Trump's Absence
Infantino told reporters: "No, no. I suppose he still has a few other things to do. When he's at the stadium, people will ask, 'What's he doing at the stadium when there's so much going on in the world?' I'm always in touch with him and his government, which is doing a great job with the World Cup."
The FIFA president emphasized that the US administration has been supportive of the tournament, which is being hosted across North America. Trump had previously promised in January 2025 that he would attend "more than one" match, saying: "I would like to go to, certainly, more than one. We'll be making the rounds. It's a period of a month and it's really top-of-the-line. It's one of the great events of anywhere in the world."
Trump Expected at the Final
Despite his no-show so far, Infantino confirmed that Trump is expected to attend the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19, and will present the trophy alongside the FIFA president. "Hopefully we'll present the trophy together in the final. That's always been the plan - and that's how it's always been done in the past - for the president of the country hosting the final to present the trophy together with the FIFA president," Infantino said.
The final will see Spain face Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. England secured third place by defeating France 6-4 in a high-scoring playoff on Saturday. The champion will be decided in Sunday's showpiece event.
Trump's Previous World Cup Promises
Trump's earlier commitment to attend multiple games has not materialized, but the White House has not commented on his specific schedule. The US hosted the tournament for the first time since 1994, with matches held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Trump's attendance at the final would mark his first appearance at a World Cup game during this tournament.
