Wales fly-half Gareth Anscombe says he hopes to announce a new club in the coming weeks, expressing a desire to continue playing. The 35-year-old spent a season in France with Bayonne but has returned to Wales as he seeks his next move.
Speaking on the SportIn Wales podcast, Anscombe said: "If I knew, we'd probably be able to share it. We're just working out a few things. I think I've said it before, but I'd like to keep playing. I still think there's another year or so in me." He added: "The body feels pretty good. The one perk of not playing that much in France is the body handling everything all right. I'd like to play. We'll see what works out in the next couple of weeks."
Scarlets Coach's Dual Role
New Scarlets defence coach Eamon O'Carroll says he will honour his deal with the west Walians despite being promoted to interim head coach at St Helens last week. Following the sudden departure of head coach Paul Rowley, O'Carroll was handed the reins on Thursday at the Super League club, with his first match the following day. They were ultimately comfortably beaten by Wigan Warriors at the Brick Community Stadium.
O'Carroll said: "It happened really quickly. We came for our last training day on Thursday and we were told of the situation. It was quite a whirlwind really. We’re all thinking of ‘Rowls’. Obviously, we’re disappointed. We wish him and his family all the best. The real test then, although you feel empathetic, is you have to concentrate on the task in hand, and that’s what we try to do to the best of our ability." He added: "I believe that’s the plan until the end of the year. Obviously I’m honoured but it’s a bit bizarre because I feel for Rowls." The club has given no timeline for appointing Rowley's full-time replacement, but O'Carroll will not take the job long-term: "I’m leaving (at) the end of the year. I’ve signed to go into rugby union with Scarlets and I’ll be honouring that."
Nonu Joins Sharks
Former All Black Ma'a Nonu has joined the Sharks in a mentorship role to continue his remarkable rugby journey. The two-time World Cup winner will link up with the South African side, having recently finished with French outfit Toulon. At 44, Nonu's longevity is stunning.
The centre has arrived in Durban to support player development and strengthen the team's high-performance culture. According to reports, Nonu remains available for selection, likely providing cover when André Esterhuizen is away on Springbok duty.
Nonu said: "The Sharks are one of the world’s most iconic rugby clubs, and Durban has always been a special place for me to travel to. One of my earliest away matches in Super Rugby was played here, and I’ve carried fond memories of this city and its passionate rugby fans ever since. I have immense respect for JP. We competed against each other for many years, and I’m looking forward to working with him and the team. This is a great opportunity to give back to the game. Working alongside the future stars of our sport is exciting, and I’m looking forward to doing everything I can to help the club during my time there."
