Wigan Warriors survived a major scare from Wakefield Trinity to secure a 28-22 victory in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals, setting up a mouthwatering semi-final against St Helens. The match at Belle Vue saw Wakefield take an early 12-0 lead, but Wigan fought back to win a tense contest.
Wakefield, who have undergone significant investment and renovation of their stadium, started strongly with tries from Jake Trueman and Ky Rodwell. However, Wigan responded through Patrick Mago and Liam Marshall to level the scores. Tom Johnstone then restored Wakefield's lead before a crucial moment just before half-time.
Wakefield forward Jazz Tevaga was sin-binned for kicking Marshall in a tackle, a decision that proved costly. Harry Smith scored on the hooter to give Wigan an 18-16 lead at the break. Zach Eckersley extended the advantage after the restart, and despite Cam Scott's equaliser for Wakefield, Eckersley's second try sealed the win.
Wigan coach Matt Peet praised the contest, saying: 'I imagine that was a great game for the neutrals because even though we got the win, it looked like we could have lost it right until the end.' Wakefield coach Daryl Powell refused to blame Tevaga, stating: 'I'm not going to blame Jazz for the loss, I think that's important.'
The victory means Wigan will face St Helens in the semi-finals, while holders Hull KR take on Warrington Wolves in the other tie. Despite the loss, Wakefield's performance signals their resurgence as a force in Super League.
