Tom Brady's Dual NFL Roles Under Scrutiny Amid Raiders' On-Field Struggles

Tom Brady, the legendary seven-time Super Bowl champion, has found himself at the centre of a contentious debate regarding his dual roles within the National Football League. As a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, holding a 5 percent stake, and a lead analyst for Fox Sports under a lucrative 10-year, $375 million contract, Brady's positions have raised eyebrows across the sport.

Player Survey Reveals Mixed Reactions to Brady's Unique Position

According to an annual anonymous player survey conducted by The Athletic, which involved nearly 80 NFL participants, a significant majority expressed acceptance of Brady's unusual career path. Specifically, 84.2 percent of respondents stated they were 'OK with Tom Brady being allowed to be an owner and broadcaster in the NFL.' This tolerance appears to be partly influenced by the Raiders' dismal performance on the field, which has softened perceptions of any potential conflict of interest.

One NFC defensive veteran, speaking anonymously, bluntly captured the sentiment of many by remarking, 'The Raiders f***ing suck. How is it helping with that? What are we talking about?' This comment underscores how the team's struggles—culminating in a 3-14 season, the firing of coach Pete Carroll, and securing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft—have shaped player opinions.

The GOAT's Legacy Grants Leeway, Say Some Players

Several players pointed to Brady's unparalleled success as a quarterback as justification for his multifaceted involvement in the league. One participant noted, 'Only GOAT's can do that type of stuff,' while another added, 'He's earned the right to do that.' However, not all were in agreement; five players responded with a firm 'No' to Brady's dual role, and seven indicated they either didn't know or didn't care about the situation.

NFL Eases Restrictions Ahead of 2025 Season

In response to Brady's unique circumstances, the NFL has adjusted some of its rules ahead of the 2025 campaign. The league now permits Brady to participate in production meetings with teams, provided these sessions are conducted virtually or via Zoom. This marks a relaxation from previous restrictions, though significant limitations remain in place.

Brady is still prohibited from watching team practices or entering any training complexes, measures implemented after he acquired his stake in the Raiders. For instance, ahead of Super Bowl 59, Brady was allowed to attend production meetings with the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles but was barred from observing their practice sessions.

Influence and Accountability in Las Vegas

Despite his minority ownership status, Brady is said to wield considerable influence within the Raiders organisation, working closely with general manager John Spytek. This dynamic has fuelled ongoing discussions about potential conflicts of interest, particularly given his high-profile broadcasting duties with Fox. Yet, as the survey suggests, the Raiders' persistent on-field challenges have led many within the league to view Brady's roles through a more lenient lens, prioritising his legendary status over regulatory concerns.
