State of Origin Heads to New Zealand in Historic $5 Million Deal for 2027
State of Origin to Play in New Zealand for First Time in 2027

In a landmark move for rugby league, an official State of Origin match will be staged outside Australia for the first time in history. The New Zealand government has secured the rights to host Game 2 of the series at Auckland's iconic 50,000-seat Eden Park in 2027, following a successful bid worth $5 million.

A Strategic Move to Expand the Game's Reach

According to reports from Code Sports, the deal was formally signed in January, after negotiations between the New Zealand government and the National Rugby League (NRL) commenced before the Christmas period. This initiative aligns with the ARL Commission's ambition to take the fiercely contested interstate rivalry abroad, particularly as Papua New Guinea prepares to join the NRL premiership in 2028.

This will not be the first Origin match played on foreign soil, but it marks the first official fixture overseas. An exhibition game was held in Long Beach, California, back in 1987, where New South Wales triumphed over Queensland with a score of 30-18. However, the 2027 event represents a significant step in the competition's international expansion strategy.

Economic Incentives and Tourism Boost

The decision follows New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's announcement in September of a substantial $70 million funding package aimed at enhancing major events and tourism. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston emphasised the economic benefits, stating that major events act as a 'bonanza for the cities and regions that host them'.

'We know big events deliver,' Minister Upston remarked. 'For example, over three years, 14 Auckland shows - including Coldplay and Pearl Jam - generated $33.7 million for the local economy, with 490,000 attendees. We want to see more action like that and we are stepping up with incentives to promoters to make it happen.'

Logistical Adjustments for Broadcast and Viewership

With New Zealand operating two hours ahead of the Australian eastern seaboard, scheduling the match required careful negotiation. To accommodate Australian fans, the game will kick off at 9:30 PM local time in Auckland, allowing viewers in New South Wales and Queensland to tune in at 7:30 PM AEDT.

The NRL is optimistic about attracting a larger audience, building on the impressive viewership figures from the 2025 Origin series, which drew 11.4 million viewers across its three games. ARLC chairman Peter V'landys expressed confidence, noting, 'Origin in New Zealand would rate the house down. We will keep trying new things to grow our audience...and the one thing we have that the AFL doesn't is international appeal.'

A $100 Million Spectacle with Global Ambitions

State of Origin is not just a sporting contest; it is a $100 million event and consistently ranks among the highest-rated television programmes annually. V'landys highlighted the strategic focus on growth, stating, 'We will keep growing. If New Zealand is the growth area, we will attack.'

Sir Graham Lowe, the only non-Australian to coach a State of Origin team after leading Queensland to a 2-1 series victory in 1991, shared his enthusiasm. 'Origin is a special sporting event, it gets watched closely by many people here in New Zealand...and I just know that if the game itself is here in this country, it will be a sporting event like few others we have ever seen,' he said last year.

Lowe added, 'State of Origin brings along an excitement package really that can't be rivalled. I just think it's a unique thing and if we can get it across the line, the country will be better off for it.'

Future Prospects and Women's Origin

Looking ahead, there is also speculation that a women's State of Origin match could be played in Christchurch later this year, further cementing New Zealand's role in the expansion of rugby league's premier competitions.

This historic move underscores the NRL's commitment to broadening its international footprint while delivering significant economic and cultural benefits to host nations. As anticipation builds for 2027, fans from both sides of the Tasman can look forward to witnessing this iconic rivalry in a new, electrifying setting.
