Louis Rees-Zammit Signs Long-Term Bristol Bears Deal After NFL Stint
Rees-Zammit Commits Long-Term Future to Bristol Bears

Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit has ended any uncertainty over his playing future by signing a new long-term contract with Premiership side Bristol Bears. The 24-year-old speedster, who returned to rugby union this season after a high-profile attempt to break into American football with the NFL, has now firmly recommitted his talents to the club he describes as "perfect" for him.

From NFL Ambitions to Bristol Certainty

Louis Rees-Zammit's journey over the past year has been a whirlwind. After leaving rugby following the 2023 Rugby World Cup, he secured training camp contracts with two NFL franchises: the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars. His initial return to rugby with Bristol in the summer was on a one-year deal, with a clear eye on joining the proposed new breakaway rugby league, R360, in 2026.

However, those plans were upended in November when R360 organisers announced their launch would be postponed until 2028 at the earliest. This development forced the wing into a decisive rethink about his next career move. Choosing to extend his stay at Ashton Gate emerged as the clear and logical choice for the player.

"The Perfect Club" for Expressing His Talents

Expressing his delight at the new agreement, Rees-Zammit highlighted the environment at Bristol as key to his decision. "I'm incredibly happy to have committed my future to Bristol. This is the perfect club for me and I'm excited to see what we can achieve," he stated.

He emphasised that the Bears' setup allows him to play his natural game. "The environment here allows me to express myself and play the game the way I love and that brings out the best in me," Rees-Zammit added. He also paid tribute to the club's supporters, saying: "Running out at Ashton Gate in front of huge crowds and feeling that energy from the fans is special. It makes me excited about what we can build together in the years ahead."

A World-Class Talent Scratching the Surface

Since his return to the fifteen-a-side code, Rees-Zammit has quickly reminded everyone of his devastating attacking prowess. He has scored six tries in just eight appearances for the Bears this season, reaffirming his status as one of the game's most lethal finishers. His form earned him a recall to the Wales national team for their autumn internationals, his first caps since the World Cup.

While his primary position is on the wing, he has also impressed coaches with his performances at full-back during the recent festive fixture period. Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam was effusive in his praise for the player's impact and potential.

"Louis is a world-class talent and someone who embodies the way we want to play," Lam said. "Since coming back from the NFL, he's shown incredible professionalism and hunger to keep improving. His speed, power and skill set are obvious, but what really stands out is his willingness to learn, adapt and deliver on the biggest stage."

Lam believes the best is yet to come. "What's exciting is that he's only just scratching the surface of his ability. At 24, there's so much more to come from him. If he keeps progressing on this journey, he has everything it takes to become one of the very best players in the world. We're delighted he's committed his long-term future to the club."

The deal is a major boost for Bristol Bears as they push for success on multiple fronts. Pat Lam's side currently sits fourth in the Gallagher Premiership table as they prepare for their next league clash against Sale Sharks on Friday.
