Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit has emphatically committed his future to Bristol Bears, signing a new long-term contract with the Gallagher Premiership club. The move comes after the 24-year-old's high-profile return from an 18-month spell attempting to forge a career in the American NFL.
From NFL Dream to Bristol Homecoming
The dynamic back rejoined the rugby union fold with Bristol for the 2025-26 season after his American football venture concluded. His decision to try out as a wide receiver saw him spend time with the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, but he was unable to secure a permanent starting role. Having previously made 77 appearances for Gloucester between 2018 and 2024, Rees-Zammit has now firmly planted his flag at Ashton Gate.
Since his return to the 15-a-side game, his impact has been immediate and potent. In just eight appearances for the title-chasing Bears, Rees-Zammit has already crossed the try line six times. His form was so compelling that it earned him a recall to the Wales national team during the recent autumn internationals, where he featured on the wing.
"The Perfect Club For Me"
Expressing his delight at the new deal, Rees-Zammit highlighted the environment at Bristol as key to his decision. "I'm incredibly happy to have committed my future to Bristol," he said. "This is the perfect club for me and I'm excited to see what we can achieve here. The environment here allows me to express myself and play the game the way I love and that brings out the best in me."
His sentiments were strongly echoed by the club's director of rugby, Pat Lam, who announced the deal on Wednesday. Lam believes the Welshman's American sojourn has ultimately benefited him as a rugby player.
Lam's Vision: A World-Class Talent
"Louis is a world-class talent and someone who embodies the way we want to play at Bristol," stated Lam. He went on to praise the player's attitude since returning from the NFL, noting his "incredible professionalism and hunger to keep improving."
Lam pinpointed the full-back position, where Rees-Zammit starred in last week's victory over Newcastle, as potentially his best, though he operates on the wing for Wales. The coach's excitement for the future was palpable. "His speed, power and skill set are obvious, but what really stands out is his willingness to learn, adapt and deliver on the biggest stage," Lam added.
Perhaps most significantly, Lam suggested the best is yet to come. "What's exciting is that he's only just scratching the surface of his ability - at just 24, there's so much more to come from him. If he keeps progressing on this journey, he has everything it takes to become one of the very best players in the world."
This long-term commitment marks the closing of one chapter—his NFL dream—and the firm opening of another, with Bristol Bears and Welsh rugby set to be the major beneficiaries of Louis Rees-Zammit's refined talents and renewed focus.
