Emma Raducanu Forced to Withdraw from Qatar Open Following On-Court Medical Incident
British tennis star Emma Raducanu was compelled to retire from her opening round match at the Qatar Open on Monday after a doctor intervened to check her blood pressure during play. This alarming episode marks another setback in her challenging return to form, coming just forty-eight hours after a disappointing straight-sets defeat in the Transylvania Open final.
A Troubling Pattern of Health Concerns
The twenty-three-year-old athlete from Bromley had already endured a difficult weekend in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where she was soundly beaten 6-0, 6-2 by Sorana Cirstea. That final was overshadowed by evident fitness struggles, necessitating a medical timeout. Unfortunately, those health issues flared up again during her first-round encounter against Camila Osorio in Doha.
After securing her first-ever set in the tournament at her third attempt, Raducanu appeared to fatigue significantly after being broken midway through the second set. She ultimately lost that set 6-4, allowing her opponent to level the match. The situation deteriorated further in the deciding set when she dropped serve before the doctor was summoned to the court.
Although Raducanu briefly returned to play one more game, her movement was severely hampered. She eventually made her way to the net to concede the match, retiring with the score at 2-6, 6-4, 0-2. This withdrawal continues a turbulent period for the former US Open champion.
A Rocky Start to the Season and Coaching Instability
Raducanu had been striving to build momentum after reaching her first final since her historic 2021 US Open victory. However, her season began poorly with a first-round exit at the Australian Open in January, where she fell in straight sets to world number fifty-five Anastasia Potapova. In response, she parted ways with coach Franciso Roig after just six months, leaving her in search of her tenth career trainer as she arrived in her father Ion's homeland of Romania.
Despite the setbacks, there were positive moments during her week in northeastern Romania. Raducanu demonstrated remarkable resilience, recovering from a 5-0 deficit against Kaja Juvan in the second round and overturning a set deficit in a grueling semi-final against Oleksandra Oliynykova—a physically demanding battle during which she sustained a shoulder injury.
Uncertain Future and Gracious Acknowledgments
There had been considerable debate about whether Raducanu would compete in Doha as she continues to grapple with the demands of regular tour tennis. She persevered until she could no longer continue. The Qatar Open is part of a Middle Eastern double-header, with a second WTA 1000 event scheduled in Dubai next week. It remains unclear whether Raducanu will participate.
Following her defeat in the Transylvania Open final, Raducanu expressed her gratitude in a heartfelt speech. "I want to say thank you to all the ball kids, all the umpires, all the sponsors who made this tournament possible. There's so much work that goes on behind the scenes. I want to thank the public. You really made me feel at home this week," she said.
"Sorry today I couldn't bring my best. But congratulations as well to Sorana—you've had an incredible week. I think you're playing great tennis. I don't know if this is your last tournament in Cluj here, but I know if it was me I'd be out on a high. Congrats for everything."
She added, "Honestly it's been a while since I've given one of these speeches. I wanna thank Alexis and the people back home who've supported me throughout the last few years. It's been like four or five years since my last final. It means a lot. I'm really happy it's here in Cluj."
The British star continues to face significant challenges with consistency and health, but remains determined to progress with her latest coaching setup, underscoring the ongoing pressures at the highest level of professional tennis.
