Mike Tindall found himself in an awkward situation on his rugby podcast when a guest asked about Princess Anne, not realising she is Tindall's mother-in-law. The exchange occurred on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby, co-hosted by Tindall, James Haskell and Alex Payne.
During a discussion about a recent Six Nations moment involving Princess Anne and Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu, former France international Ben Kayser admitted he was unsure of the royal's identity. “I don’t even know… who is she exactly? Is it a princess?” Kayser asked, before clarifying her title as The Princess Royal.
Kayser then joked, “Is it your mother-in-law?! I just don’t want to get it wrong!” The hosts burst into laughter and teased Kayser, suggesting he should greet her with a hug next time.
The moment referenced a widely-shared incident earlier this month when Tuipulotu appeared to lean in for a hug with Anne after Scotland's victory over France, but she stepped back and offered a handshake instead. Members of the Royal Family typically avoid hugging the public during official engagements.
Anne, patron of Scottish Rugby Union for decades, has a long history with the sport. She previously revealed on the same podcast that her involvement began by chance when she was invited to open a stand at Murrayfield.
