Former Wales and British & Irish Lions scrum-half Mike Phillips has landed a new job in rugby, coaching an under-nines team in Dubai. The iconic scrum-half established himself as one of the best players in the world in his position during a career that saw him earn 94 caps for Wales and five for the British & Irish Lions. A key member of the Welsh side during a hugely successful period, Phillips also won Grand Slam titles in 2008 and 2012 before lifting another Six Nations in 2013.
Move to the Middle East
He retired from professional rugby in 2017 and moved to Dubai the following year, initially working as a TV consultant for beIn Sports as well as setting up the Mike Phillips Rugby Academy for children aged between four and 14. Having built his life in the Middle East over the last eight years, Phillips is now taking on a new youth rugby role with the ambitious Dubai Broncos, with the club appointing him as their new U9s coach and 'passing specialist'.
Club's coaching staff
The club - which has mini, junior and youth sections for children aged between four and 16 - has already brought in a host of former professionals as coaching staff, but Phillips is the most decorated of the lot. His fellow Wales international and former teammate Rob Evans was brought in earlier this year as the Broncos' new forwards coach for their youth section, while ex-Italy international Aaron Persico has been appointed as the club's head of rugby. Former Saracens wing Mike Ellery will work with Evans as backs coach, while ex-British indoor sprint champion Danish Walker-Khan has been brought on board as a specialist speed coach.
Club statement
In a statement, the Broncos confirmed that Phillips will start his new role this season, with a post on social media reading: "We're incredibly excited to welcome Mike Phillips to the Dubai Broncos coaching team for the 2026/27 season."
"Mike brings a huge amount of experience to the club, having represented Wales 99 times and earned 6 caps for the British & Irish Lions at the highest level of the game."
"What excites us most is Mike's passion for giving back to the next generation. He's really keen to work with our young players, helping them develop their skills, confidence and passion for rugby in a positive and enjoyable environment."
The statement continued: "Mike will be working with our U9s, as well as supporting players across the club as our Passing Specialist.
