Liverpool Axed Duo Van Bronckhorst and Hulshoff Land Feyenoord Jobs
Giovanni van Bronckhorst has secured a new managerial role at Feyenoord just three days after leaving Liverpool, with former Reds colleague Sipke Hulshoff set to join him as assistant in Rotterdam.
Van Bronckhorst and Hulshoff were casualties of Arne Slot's dismissal at Liverpool last week, as the club begins a new chapter under Andoni Iraola. The pair have swiftly found employment, returning to the Netherlands where Van Bronckhorst will take charge of one of Dutch football's giants. Hulshoff previously served as Slot's assistant at Feyenoord before moving to Anfield.
Van Bronckhorst's Return to Feyenoord
Van Bronckhorst joined Liverpool after their Premier League triumph, replacing John Heitinga. However, he could not prevent the Reds' decline to fifth place, prompting major changes. He began his professional career at Feyenoord in 1993 and later managed the club 11 years ago, winning the KNVB Cup in his first season and the Eredivisie title the following year—the club's first in 18 years.
After leaving Feyenoord, Van Bronckhorst managed Rangers, leading them to the Europa League final, and later had a brief stint at Besiktas, where he was sacked after 20 games.
Replacing Robin van Persie
Van Bronckhorst replaces Robin van Persie, who was dismissed by Feyenoord last week after one full season. Van Persie guided the team to second place, but they finished 19 points behind champions PSV and were criticized for constant tactical changes. Feyenoord technical director Devy Rigaux explained the decision, citing a thorough evaluation of team performance and a downward trend in points.
Van Persie's sacking came after a season where Feyenoord never challenged for the title, leading the club to seek a new head coach for the upcoming campaign.
