England lock Maro Itoje has called for immediate improvements from the British & Irish Lions after their narrow defeat to Australia in the first Test. The Saracens star, a key figure in the Lions pack, admitted the team fell short of expectations but insisted they have the quality to turn the series around.
Itoje Demands Higher Standards
"We know we didn't perform to our potential," Itoje told reporters after the 23-21 loss. "There were moments where we let ourselves down, particularly in our discipline and set-piece execution. The Wallabies punished us for those mistakes."
The 28-year-old forward, who won three turnovers during the match, acknowledged Australia's strong defensive effort but believes the Lions have plenty more to offer: "We created opportunities but didn't take them. That's something we'll be working hard to rectify this week."
Key Areas for Improvement
Itoje highlighted several areas where the Lions must improve:
- Better discipline at the breakdown
- More clinical finishing in attack
- Stronger set-piece dominance
- Improved defensive organisation
The second row emphasised the need for composure under pressure: "Test matches are decided by small margins. We need to be smarter in those crucial moments."
Wallabies Praise Lions' Physicality
Despite the defeat, Australia captain Michael Hooper admitted his side had been pushed to their limits by the Lions' physical approach. "Maro was outstanding at the breakdown," Hooper said. "We know they'll come back even stronger next week."
The second Test takes place in Melbourne, with the Lions needing victory to keep the three-match series alive. Coach Warren Gatland is expected to make several changes to his starting XV after reviewing the first Test performance.
Itoje remains confident about the Lions' chances: "This group has shown we can adapt and improve quickly. We'll be ready."
