Wales rugby legend Ieuan Evans will step down from his role as chairman of the British & Irish Lions this week, concluding a near four-year tenure with the touring side.
Evans, who took up the position in 2022, will end his term on Wednesday. During his time in the role, he served as tour manager for the 2025 series victory in Australia under head coach Andy Farrell and played a key part in preparations for the first Lions Women's tour to New Zealand next year.
A Distinguished Playing and Leadership Career
Before his administrative role, Evans represented the Lions on three tours as a player: Australia in 1989, New Zealand in 1993 and South Africa in 1997. He was also a former wing for Llanelli.
In a statement, Evans said: "It has been an enormous privilege to serve as chair of the British & Irish Lions. The Lions has played a hugely important part in my life, from the honour of representing the jersey as a player to helping shape its future as chair."
Recognition from the Lions Organisation
Evans thanked his fellow board members, Lions CEO Ben Calveley, staff, players, coaches, partners and supporters for their backing during his tenure. Calveley paid tribute to Evans, who oversaw the recruitment of independent directors while in the role.
Calveley said: "Ieuan has given an extraordinary amount to the British & Irish Lions over the years, both as a player and through his leadership as chair. His infectious passion for the Lions and understanding of what makes this organisation so special has been evident throughout his time in the role."
He added: "His contribution has been particularly significant during a period of real progress for the organisation, from the record-breaking success of the 2025 tour to helping lay the foundations for the inaugural Lions Women's tour, and strengthening the governance of the organisation."
Next Steps for the Lions
The Lions confirmed in their farewell statement that the process to replace Evans would begin in due course. The men's team is next scheduled to tour New Zealand in 2029.
