Jordan Henderson's World Cup Over After Freak Celebration Injury
Henderson's World Cup Over After Freak Celebration Injury

Jordan Henderson's World Cup is feared to be over after the midfielder sustained a freak arm injury while celebrating England's thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico, where they played with 10 men. The veteran was left in considerable pain after tripping over advertising hoardings and landing awkwardly, with his right arm trapped beneath his body. He was stretchered off, given oxygen, and rushed to hospital.

Update on Henderson's Condition

An update on his condition has now been provided, with Henderson remaining in Mexico City. According to football writer John Cross, it is highly unlikely he will play again this summer. Speaking on the latest episode of Make Football Great Again, Cross said: "Well, it feels like it might be [his World Cup over], to be honest. I know it's a sort of a wrist, a stroke arm injury which, you know, you probably get in plaster and what have you, but that early stage is going to be difficult for him and as the team travels back to their base in Kansas City, Jordan Henderson is staying behind in Mexico City to kind of have this set and repaired."

Devastating Blow for England

Cross added: "It feels as if it's probably going to be his World Cup over. What an absolute hammer blow, really, because he was put up in the press conference pre-match, Tuchel clearly thinks he's going to say the right thing and sort of motivate the troops. I just thought, wow, that's so heartbreaking. He's such a good character and person and leader. I think that that's absolutely devastating for him."

Manager Tuchel's Reaction

England manager Thomas Tuchel provided a worrying update after the match, confirming Henderson had been taken to hospital. Speaking to the BBC, Tuchel said: "Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over an injured his wrist, it looks really bad." When questioned during his press conference, he added: "He injured his wrist, he's gone to hospital it's quite a serious injury. It doesn't fit with the night. I don't know if there will be a procedure."

England's Quarter-Final Outlook

The joy of victory swiftly turned to worry for Henderson at the final whistle, following a monumental effort with Jarell Quansah being sent off in the 54th minute. Goalscorers Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham both gave their thoughts on Henderson's situation before Tuchel's update. The Three Lions are set to return to action this Saturday when they take on Norway in the quarter-finals, following their impressive victory over Brazil. As it stands, the only other confirmed quarter-final match is on the opposite side of the draw, with France due to face Morocco after triumphs over Paraguay and Canada, respectively.
