Helena Rowland Defied Career Threat to Win Rugby World Cup

England Star's Triumph Over Injury to Secure Rugby World Cup Victory

Helena Rowland, the talented England rugby player, has revealed she competed in last year's Women's Rugby World Cup with the knowledge that it could potentially mark the end of her professional career. Despite being only 25 years old at the time, Rowland faced a serious foot injury that threatened to force her into early retirement.

The Lisfranc Injury That Threatened Everything

Rowland was battling what is medically known as a Lisfranc injury, a complex foot problem that had already required two surgical procedures. A third operation was scheduled for just ten days after the World Cup final at Sydney's Allianz Stadium. The injury had been persisting since the previous World Cup in 2022, creating significant uncertainty about her future in the sport.

"I was kind of aware that whatever was coming next was last-chance saloon," Rowland explained. "There was a chance that it doesn't work and you are not in any less pain than you were before. It had probably been something at the back of my mind that I knew."

The reality of her situation became particularly clear during the summer leading up to the World Cup preparations. "It really dawned on me that we'll get that done, it will be five or six months out and if it works, great and if it doesn't, it doesn't and that is the reality of it," she admitted.

Playing Through Pain for Team Glory

Remarkably, despite the physical limitations caused by her injury, Rowland was still described by England coach John Mitchell as the team's most valuable player. Her versatility, allowing her to play any position from fly-half to full-back, made her an essential asset even when coming off the bench.

Rowland started in the quarter-final against Scotland, wearing the number 15 jersey in place of Ellie Kildunne, before returning to bench roles for both the semi-final and final matches. She helped England secure their first Women's Rugby World Cup victory in eleven years, achieved in front of a world-record crowd at Allianz Stadium.

However, the personal satisfaction was tempered by frustration. "I think there was always a part of me that didn't think I was contributing what I was capable of, which was quite frustrating," Rowland confessed. "Outwardly, you wouldn't necessarily see that, but inwardly, it was what I was feeling."

Successful Surgery and Academic Pursuits

Following the World Cup triumph, Rowland underwent her third foot surgery as planned. She made her competitive return to rugby in March, playing for Loughborough Lightning in Premiership Women's Rugby. Her performance earned her an immediate recall to the England squad for the upcoming Guinness Women's Six Nations opener against Ireland.

During her recovery period, Rowland demonstrated remarkable foresight by pursuing a master's degree in physiology. "I knew I would have an extended break and then whatever happens on the back of that, I've still got something I'm doing, working towards a career afterwards," she explained regarding her academic decision.

With one year of her master's program completed, Rowland now focuses on her dissertation while simultaneously returning to peak rugby form. "Now I'm playing games and not thinking about it, which is a bit weird, I've not done that for quite a while," she noted about her recovery progress.

Looking Forward to New Challenges

The upcoming match against Ireland at Allianz Stadium has already generated tremendous interest, with 70,000 tickets sold for the Guinness Women's Six Nations opener. After the uncertainty of the previous year, Rowland expresses genuine excitement about her return to international rugby, this time without the shadow of injury limiting her capabilities.

Her journey represents not only athletic triumph but also personal resilience, as she balanced professional sports with academic advancement during one of the most challenging periods of her career. Rowland's story serves as an inspiring example of determination in the face of potential career-ending adversity.
