Former Rugby Captain Stuart Hogg Stripped of MBE After Domestic Abuse Conviction
Former Scotland rugby union captain Stuart Hogg has been officially stripped of his MBE after pleading guilty to domestic abuse offences against an ex-partner. A formal notice published in The Gazette, the official public record, confirms the cancellation and annulment of his appointment to the Member of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
Honour Awarded and Subsequently Revoked
Hogg had originally received the MBE in the 2024 New Year Honours list, recognised for his distinguished services to rugby. However, this accolade has now been revoked following his criminal conviction for abusive behaviour.
Details of the Abuse Case
In November 2024, Hogg admitted to abusing his estranged wife through a pattern of distressing conduct. The offences included shouting and swearing, tracking her movements without consent, and sending alarming and distressing messages. This behaviour caused significant emotional harm and led to legal proceedings.
In January 2025, he was sentenced to a community payback order with one year of supervision as an alternative to imprisonment. Additionally, he was fined £600 and ordered to pay a £40 victim surcharge. By June 2025, a sheriff noted his complete compliance with the court order, though the conviction remained on his record.
Political Pressure and Public Response
Earlier in 2025, the SNP's Westminster leader, Stephen Flynn, publicly called for Hogg to be stripped of the honour during a Commons session. First Minister John Swinney supported this stance, describing the call as reasonable and understandable given the severity of the offences. This political intervention highlighted broader societal expectations regarding honours and conduct.
The revocation underscores the principle that honours can be forfeited if the recipient's actions fall short of the standards expected. It serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of domestic abuse, even for high-profile sports figures.
