England full-back Ellie Kildunne has been ruled out of the team's Rugby World Cup quarter-final against Scotland next Sunday due to concussion protocol. The reigning world player of the year was immediately removed from the pitch after hitting her head on the ground following a tackle during the Red Roses' win over Australia, and did not undergo a head injury assessment.
Kildunne must now observe a mandatory 12-day stand-down period. If England reach the semi-finals, she could be available to play, but that depends on her passing the return-to-play protocols. The Red Roses have Gloucester's Emma Sing as backup full-back, as well as versatile back Helena Rowland who can also play the position.
England's victory in their final pool match secured top spot in Pool A and set up a clash with Bryan Easson's Scotland. Head coach John Mitchell praised Scotland's performance in the tournament, saying: 'It's great to be playing against Scotland, they have been playing really well. Considering what they have had to experience, contract conditions and those sorts of things they are doing a remarkable job.'
Scotland have not beaten England since 1999, but Mitchell noted they have changed their game since the Six Nations, presenting opportunities for England to exploit. England captain Alex Matthews acknowledged the team's high error count in the match against Australia but praised their defensive effort, stating: 'Our defence was incredible. To hardly have the ball in that first half and still come in winning [was pleasing].'
