Pat Cummins Ruled Out of T20 World Cup as Australia Overlook Steve Smith
Cummins Out, Smith Overlooked for Australia T20 World Cup

In a significant development for Australian cricket, fast bowler Pat Cummins has been officially ruled out of the squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup due to persistent back concerns, while veteran batsman Steve Smith has been overlooked by selectors despite recent form.

Injury Sidelines Cummins as Selectors Make Tough Calls

Pat Cummins, the star quick, will miss the upcoming T20 World Cup campaign as he continues to recover from a niggling back injury that has plagued him for over six months. This decision comes as selectors opt to prioritise his long-term fitness, with Sydney Sixers player Ben Dwarshuis receiving a late call-up to fill the void.

Smith's Late Surge Not Enough for Selection

Steve Smith, who delivered a blazing cameo for the Sydney Sixers in the recent Big Bash League, was not included in the final squad. This oversight occurs despite mounting pressure to incorporate his experience and batting prowess, highlighting the competitive nature of Australia's selection process.

New Faces Bolster Australia's World Cup Hopes

Former Test opener Matt Renshaw, who made his T20 international debut just two days ago in Pakistan, has been added to the revised squad as a replacement for Matt Short. Selector Tony Dodemaide explained the rationale behind these changes, emphasising the strategic benefits of the new inclusions.

Dodemaide stated: "With Pat needing more time to recover from his back injury, Ben is a ready replacement who offers a left-arm pace option as well as dynamic fielding and late-order hitting. We believe his ability to swing the ball at good pace along with clever variations will be well suited to the conditions we expect and overall structure of the squad."

Regarding Renshaw, Dodemaide added: "Matt has impressed in all formats of late, including in multiple roles in white-ball formats for Australia, the Queensland Bulls, and the Brisbane Heat. With the top order settled and spin-heavy conditions expected in the pool stages in Sri Lanka, we also feel Matt provides extra middle-order support, with Tim David completing his return-to-play program in the early phase of the tournament. As a left-hander, he also offers a point of difference to the middle-order batting."

Australia is set to play another T20 against Pakistan following their loss in the opening game, before commencing their World Cup campaign against Ireland on 11 February in Colombo. The final squad, led by captain Mitch Marsh, includes:
