Courtney Lawes Set for English Rugby Return, Fueling World Cup Speculation
Courtney Lawes, the esteemed 37-year-old forward and former England captain, is poised to make a highly anticipated return to English rugby for the upcoming season. This move has ignited widespread discussion about the possibility of his reinstatement to the England squad ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
A Storied Career and French Sojourn
Lawes boasts an impressive international record, having earned 105 caps for England and an additional five with the British & Irish Lions. He concluded his Test career following the 2023 World Cup. For the past two seasons, he has been plying his trade with Brive in the French second division. However, on Monday, Brive officially announced his departure, confirming his imminent return to his homeland.
Sale Sharks have emerged as the frontrunner to secure his signature, with an announcement potentially coming as early as Tuesday. Lawes spent his entire club career with Northampton Saints before his move to France, making this transfer a significant homecoming.
Potential England Recall and Sale's Ambitions
A return to the Premiership Rugby environment naturally raises the prospect of Lawes making himself available for England selection once more. The 2027 World Cup looms as a potential target, should his form and fitness permit. Lawes himself has expressed confidence in his abilities, stating last month that he believes he still has much to offer at the highest level of the game.
His arrival would bolster a Sale Sharks side that, despite a disappointing Premiership campaign with only three wins from twelve matches, is building for the future. Director of rugby Alex Sanderson has been actively seeking to strengthen his back-row options. The club had previously held talks with England flanker Chandler Cunningham-South, but financial considerations led to that deal falling through.
"I'm looking to do one more season," Lawes revealed. "That'll round me off to 20 years as a professional. I think I'm still performing at quite a high level, so I don't really want to stop yet."
Reflections on France and Future Teammates
In a heartfelt statement released by Brive, Lawes reflected fondly on his time in France. "I'm having an experience in Brive that I'll never forget, both on and off the pitch," he said. "My family and I have been very warmly welcomed and we will always have Brive at heart." He also highlighted the personal benefits, noting that his children are now fluent French speakers, a skill he values greatly.
Lawes is expected to be joined at Sale by fellow England international Joe Marchant, currently of Stade Francais, and Alex Lozowski from Saracens, signaling a concerted effort to enhance the squad's quality. Sale's immediate focus, however, is a challenging European Champions Cup quarter-final clash against Leinster this Saturday.
Decision-Making and Legacy
The veteran forward disclosed that he held discussions with Leicester Tigers, among other Premiership clubs, but ultimately found the offer from Sale more suitable. "I've known Geoff Parling for a long time," Lawes commented regarding the Leicester head coach. "Ultimately, the offer wasn't quite right. For a Northampton man like me to go and play for Leicester would have caused quite a ruckus."
As he approaches his 20th professional season, Courtney Lawes' return to English shores not only marks a significant chapter in his illustrious career but also injects a compelling narrative into the build-up towards the next World Cup cycle.
