Cornish Pirates assistant coach Alan Paver has been handed a six-week suspension after confessing to striking an opposition player during a recent Championship rugby fixture. The incident occurred late in the game as Pirates suffered a 29-7 defeat to Worcester Warriors at Mennaye Field.
Incident and Immediate Aftermath
Paver admitted that he slapped Worcester Warriors replacement Jake Garside following a scuffle that broke out on the pitch. The referee promptly showed Paver a red card, and he was instructed to leave the field immediately, which he complied with without protest.
Following the match, Paver took time to calm down before approaching officials to offer his apologies. He expressed regret to the match officials and a member of the Worcester coaching staff in the clubhouse. Paver also attempted to apologise to Worcester head coach Matt Everard, though Everard understandably declined to engage at that moment.
Disciplinary Hearing and Reduced Ban
The 48-year-old coach faced a disciplinary hearing where he received an initial 12-week ban. However, this was reduced to six weeks due to his clear remorse and impressive disciplinary record spanning over 14 years of coaching.
In a statement to the disciplinary panel, Paver said: "I would like to begin by acknowledging and accepting that I struck Worcester number 21, Jake Garside. I fully recognise that this was inappropriate and unacceptable conduct for a coach."
He continued: "I fully accept that my reaction was inappropriate and a loss of composure. I have been coaching for over 14 years and have maintained a completely clean disciplinary record throughout that time. I fully recognise that my actions do not align with the values of the game or the standards expected of me as a coach."
Impact on Cornish Pirates Season
The suspension means Paver will play no further part in the regular season as Cornish Pirates push for a playoff place in the English second tier. Five matches of his ban will cover the remainder of the current campaign, with the sixth game to be determined based on whether the team progresses in the competition.
Cornish Pirates have stated they take "full responsibility" for the incident, acknowledging the seriousness of a coach physically striking an opposition player during a professional rugby match. The club emphasised their commitment to maintaining proper standards of conduct both on and off the field.
The incident has sparked discussions about coach behavior in rugby, particularly regarding appropriate responses to on-field tensions and the importance of maintaining composure even in heated competitive situations. Paver's previously clean record and immediate acceptance of responsibility were noted as mitigating factors in the reduced suspension.
