Justin Rose's Caddie Opens Up About the Golfer's Demanding Nature
Mark Fulcher, the long-time caddie for Masters runner-up Justin Rose, has candidly shared insights into what it's truly like to work with the golfing star. Known affectionately as 'Fooch', Fulcher has been by Rose's side for over a decade, navigating the highs and lows of professional golf, including a hiatus due to heart surgery.
A Partnership Forged Through Adversity
Fulcher began caddying for Rose in 2008, a partnership that lasted until 2019 when health issues forced him to step away. After undergoing heart surgery and taking indefinite leave on medical advice, he made a triumphant return to the sport in 2023, reuniting with Rose just in time for the Ryder Cup. Since then, the duo has continued their successful collaboration, with Rose rediscovering his form and contending at the highest level.
Rose's performance notably dipped during Fulcher's absence, with only one win in that period, highlighting the caddie's crucial role in his success.
The Demands of Working with a Champion
In an interview with Beyond The Clubhouse, Fulcher didn't shy away from describing Rose as "tough, at times, but he's also very fair." He emphasized that Rose expects nothing less than 100% effort from his entire team, mirroring his own unwavering commitment. Fulcher explained, "He puts in 100% effort, and all he expects of his team members is to put in the same, so if we all do that, then nothing can be said at the end of the week."
Energy conservation has become a key focus, especially as Rose, now 45, remains incredibly fit but acknowledges the challenges of aging. Fulcher noted, "We're talking about what he needs at a certain time, and energy conservation is really important. He's 45, incredibly fit, amazingly fit for his age, but we all have to understand that, you know, Father Time is catching up."
Preparation and Team Dynamics
Fulcher praised Rose's meticulous approach to preparation, stating, "He leaves no stone unturned; he prepares as well as he possibly can." This dedication extends to his team, as Rose looks after them well but expects equal effort and problem-solving in return. Fulcher believes this mutual respect fosters a strong group dynamic, saying, "I think that's why he gets such a good group of lads together who are able to commit their time and knowledge."
Reflecting on the nature of golf, Fulcher added, "Golf is about losing most of the time, so winning's very rare. It takes a lot of effort, and Rosie puts in 105%, so that's why he's been so successful."
The Elusive Masters Victory
Rose has yet to clinch the Masters title, finishing as runner-up three times, including a playoff loss to Rory McIlroy last year. As he returns to Augusta National, Fulcher discussed the unique challenges of the course, particularly its demanding terrain. He said, "It's just so incredibly hilly. I think the first thing that anybody who's been there for the first time says about it is just how undulating it is."
With their partnership stronger than ever, Rose and Fulcher are poised to tackle Augusta once more, aiming to turn near-misses into a long-awaited Green Jacket victory.
