The Brisbane Broncos' NRL premiership celebrations have taken a controversial turn, with the club potentially facing fines after players lit cigars inside Accor Stadium following their grand final victory over the Melbourne Storm.
After overturning a 22-12 halftime deficit to win 34-22 and secure their first title since 2006, players donned ski goggles, sprayed champagne, and lit cigars in the sheds. However, stadium staff intervened, warning the team could be penalised under New South Wales' Smoke-Free Environment Act 2000.
Under the legislation, individuals can be fined $300 for smoking in spectator areas, while venue operators risk penalties up to $5,500 for permitting it or failing to display appropriate signage. Accor Stadium's website states smoking and vaping are prohibited except in designated areas.
Despite the looming fines, the mood remained euphoric. Clive Churchill Medal winner Reece Walsh, who had not consumed alcohol all year, delivered an emotional post-match interview and later posted videos flaunting his premiership ring. His performance was hailed as one of the greatest in NRL history by pundits including Darren Lockyer and Phil Gould.
The celebrations continued late into the night at The Star Casino before the team returned to their hotel around 7am ahead of their flight to Brisbane.
