Former Saracens hooker and World Cup winner Schalk Brits has delivered a powerful message regarding the international future of Owen Farrell, insisting the veteran playmaker should "never, ever be written off" for an England recall.
Farrell's Path Back to the Red Rose
Farrell has not featured for England since the 2023 Rugby World Cup, having stepped away to prioritise his mental wellbeing after a period of intense scrutiny. A subsequent short spell in France followed, but the country's record points scorer is now back starring for Saracens in the Premiership.
His absence has coincided with a stellar period for England under Steve Borthwick, who has overseen an 11-match winning streak that includes impressive victories over New Zealand and Australia. During this run, George Ford has firmly established himself as the first-choice fly-half, delivering match-winning performances, notably with crucial drop-goals against the All Blacks.
A "Great Problem" for Borthwick
Despite Ford's commanding form, Brits, who played alongside Farrell during Saracens' most successful era, believes the competition is only healthy. He argues that Farrell's relentless drive will keep him in the selection frame.
"I will never, ever write Owen Farrell off," Brits stated in an interview with CoinPoker. "He is one of those guys who takes ownership when things get hard on a rugby pitch. In the same breath, George Ford has been amazing... The way he took charge in New Zealand was really special."
"He has always been a mature, quality player, but his current form creates a great problem to have," Brits added. "If Owen Farrell can't get in because of George Ford, he will keep pushing. That competition actually elevates the team."
The Ultimate Litmus Test Awaits
Currently, Farrell finds himself behind Ford, Marcus Smith, and Fin Smith in the England pecking order. To force his way back into Borthwick's plans, he must continue to impress at club level, where he has been featuring regularly at inside centre for Saracens.
Brits also provided a reality check on England's impressive run, highlighting that true tests are won on the road. "You judge a team not when they win at home, but when they travel," he cautioned.
England's next major challenge comes in July 2025 with a tour to South Africa, a fixture Brits pinpointed as the definitive measure of their progress. "I will wait to see how far in front - or behind - they are when they start touring," he said.
While acknowledging Twickenham's intimidating atmosphere and that some decisions went England's way against New Zealand, Brits credited Borthwick's side: "Fair play to England. It is a fantastic win that will boost their confidence."
The stage is now set for a fascinating battle for the England number 10 shirt, with a certain Owen Farrell determined to prove his old teammate right.
