England Cricket Captain Ben Stokes Hospitalised After Net Session Mishap
England cricket star Ben Stokes has been rushed to hospital after sustaining severe facial injuries during a coaching session with academy players. The incident occurred at Durham's indoor facility, where Stokes was mentoring young cricketers.
Shocking Injuries Revealed on Social Media
Stokes, 34, took to Instagram earlier this week to reveal the extent of his injuries, posting an image showing significant bruising around his eye, facial scratches, and a bandaged nose. The England Test captain maintained his characteristic humour despite the painful situation, captioning the photo: "You should see the state of the cricket ball."
How the Accident Unfolded
The incident occurred when young batsman and wicketkeeper Robbie Bowman struck a powerful shot toward Stokes during the coaching session. According to Durham coach Ryan Campbell, Stokes violated what he called "the number one rule of being a coach in the nets" by turning his back on the batter.
Campbell explained: "Players shouted out a warning but Stokesy ended up turning his head towards the ball. By chance, our medical team were at the ground doing simulations. Suddenly, they had a real emergency to deal with."
Emergency Response and Hospital Visit
Stokes was immediately driven to hospital by his close friend Scottie Borthwick, accompanied by the team physio. Despite his own injuries requiring medical attention, Stokes demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship by contacting the young player responsible for the incident.
Campbell revealed: "He phoned Robbie Bowman from his hospital bed and told him not to worry. He'd have known that Robbie would have been beside himself but Ben said it was his fault. That sums up the sort of bloke Stokesy is."
Recovery Timeline and Future Plans
This facial injury represents the latest in a series of health concerns for Stokes, who is currently recovering from a groin injury sustained during the final Ashes Test. However, his recovery appears to be progressing well, with Campbell noting: "Ben has been looking good when batting in the nets."
The England captain has indicated his intention to play three or four county championship matches for Durham ahead of England's first Test of the summer against Australia in June. Stokes remains under contract with England until the conclusion of the 2027 Ashes series and is widely expected to transition into coaching following his retirement from professional play.
With 120 Test appearances for England to his name, Stokes continues to demonstrate both his commitment to the sport and his dedication to nurturing the next generation of cricketers, even when facing unexpected challenges during coaching sessions.
