Andy Farrell Eyes Lions Head Coach Role for 2029 New Zealand Tour

Andy Farrell has hinted he would be interested in leading the British & Irish Lions again, this time for the 2029 tour of New Zealand, following his side's series victory over Australia. Despite a 22-12 defeat in the third Test, which prevented a 3-0 sweep, Farrell spoke warmly of the Lions concept and his experience over the past eight weeks.

“Everyone knows what I think about this concept. I love everything that the Lions is about and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last eight weeks,” Farrell said. When asked if he would be keen to coach the Lions again, he smiled and told reporters to “read into that what you want”.

Farrell will now return to his role as Ireland head coach but paid tribute to his staff and players for an “unbelievably special” series victory. He acknowledged the frustration of the final Test but stressed that Australia deserved their win. “The best team won on the night today. On reflection, they will be unbelievably proud of what they achieved throughout this tour,” he said.

Player of the series Tadhg Beirne said the squad had already planned a reunion in Australia in 12 years' time. Captain Dan Sheehan expressed disappointment at the defeat, saying it “leaves a sour taste” despite the series win. Meanwhile, Farrell dismissed suggestions the Lions missed a tactical trick during a 38-minute lightning delay in the second half.
