Wales Women top World Cup qualifying group with 3-1 win

Wales Women topped their World Cup qualifying group with a 3-1 victory over the Czech Republic in Cardiff, making their play-off path to next year's tournament in Brazil significantly easier.

Key victory at Cardiff City Stadium

Rhian Wilkinson's side were already assured of a play-off spot, as were their opponents on Tuesday night. However, finishing top of Group B1 ensured they would avoid a League A side at the semi-final stage in October.

The win came in front of 5,607 fans at the Cardiff City Stadium, with goals from Lily Woodham, Gemma Evans, and Mared Griffiths.

Play-off implications

Now, Wales will face a lower-ranked League B side when the draw is made later this month as they aim to reach the World Cup for the first time. Coming top of the group also sealed their promotion back to League A.

There was little margin for error, with Wales needing to win while the Czech Republic could settle for a draw. The visitors opened the scoring early on, with Michael Khýrová firing them ahead after just five minutes.

Wales responded quickly, with Woodham marking her 50th cap by slotting home Sophie Ingle's pass four minutes later. Wales took the lead shortly after half-time when defender Evans headed home Ceri Holland's free-kick four minutes into the second half.

Holland again turned provider midway through the half, surging into the Czech box and squaring the ball for Griffiths to tap in.
