The 154th Open Championship is set to take place at Royal Birkdale in Southport, Merseyside, from Sunday, July 12 to Sunday, July 19, 2026. Thousands of golf fans from around the world are expected to attend one of the sport's most prestigious events, where the world's best players will compete for the Claret Jug.

Event Schedule and Start Date

The championship begins with practice days from Sunday, July 12 through Wednesday, July 15. The official tournament runs from Thursday, July 16 to Sunday, July 19, with the Champion Golfer of the Year crowned on the final day. Royal Birkdale, which first hosted The Open in 1954, is the most frequent venue after St Andrews, and this year marks its 11th time hosting the event.

Gate Opening Times

Gates open at varying times throughout the week: Sunday, July 12 at 9am; Monday to Wednesday (July 13-15) at 7am; Thursday and Friday (July 16-17) at 6am; and Saturday and Sunday (July 18-19) at 7am.

Tickets Availability

General Admission tickets for all championship days (Thursday to Sunday) are sold out. However, hospitality packages including premium, platinum, and signature options, as well as accommodation packages, are still available. Advanced 'Ticket Plus' options are sold out for Friday and Sunday, but fans can join a waiting list by emailing experiences@TheOpen.com. Practice day tickets remain for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday: Monday tickets are £40 per adult, £20 per youth, with free entry for juniors; Tuesday tickets are £50 per adult, £25 per youth; Wednesday tickets are £60 per adult, £30 per youth. Sunday practice tickets are sold out.

Travel Information

The R&A recommends using public transport as no public car parking is available at the venue. Rail services will be significantly enhanced, with Merseyrail services to Hillside station—just 300 metres from the main entrance—operating on a 10-minute frequency at peak times. Connections are available from Northern Rail at Southport and National Rail at Liverpool. For those driving, park-and-ride facilities will be provided, with dedicated buses to the course. Spectators will be directed by Variable Messaging Signs and AA event signage.

Dress Code

There is no formal dress code in public areas. The R&A advises wearing clothing and footwear suitable for the weather conditions.
