Sydney Marathon has been officially named a World Marathon Major, becoming the seventh race to join the elite series that includes Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York.
The announcement was made on Sunday, confirming the Australian event's elevation to the highest tier of global marathon racing. The Sydney Marathon, which has grown rapidly since its inception, will now be part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors series.
Rapid Rise to Global Elite
The race, first held in 2000 as part of the Sydney Olympic Games, has expanded significantly in recent years. Organisers have worked to meet the strict criteria required for Major status, including course quality, elite field depth, and mass participation numbers.
With this designation, Sydney joins a select group of marathons that attract the world's best distance runners. The 2026 edition, scheduled for later this year, will be the first to be staged as a Major.
Impact on Australian Running
The induction is expected to boost the event's international profile and draw more elite athletes and recreational runners to the city. It also places Australia firmly on the global marathon circuit, offering local runners a home Major.
Race director Wayne Larden said the announcement was the culmination of years of effort. "We are thrilled to be recognised among the world's greatest marathons," he said. "This is a proud moment for Sydney and for Australian running."
The Sydney Marathon joins the six existing Majors, with the series now spanning four continents. The next race in the series will be the Berlin Marathon in September.
