Australia's Sporting Elite Gather for Prestigious Hall of Fame Ceremony
The crème de la crème of Australian sport descended upon Melbourne's Crown Towers on Monday evening for one of the most anticipated events in the sporting calendar - the Sport Australia Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The red carpet witnessed a parade of sporting royalty as several distinguished athletes joined this exclusive club of Australian sporting greatness.
New Members Join Sporting Immortality
Among the notable figures welcomed into the Hall of Fame were rugby league legend Wally Lewis, who attended with his wife Lynda Adams following their marriage earlier this year. The ceremony also honoured AFL great Jason Dunstall and Melbourne Storm icon Cameron Smith, who recently signed with the Brisbane Broncos in a coaching capacity.
The netball world saw Laura Geitz, one of Australia's most accomplished players, receive recognition, while winter sports were represented by Torah Bright, the nation's most successful Winter Olympian with one gold and one silver medal across three Olympic Games.

The evening saw two remarkable athletes elevated to Legend status within the Hall of Fame. Australian cricket icon Belinda Clark and basketball star Andrew Gaze received this highest honour, cementing their places among Australia's sporting immortals.
Olympic swimming legend Dawn Fraser, an eight-time Olympic medallist with four gold and four silver medals, was present after being named co-Patron of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame alongside former Prime Minister John Howard. Fraser, who achieved Legend status back in 1999, has been an active mentor in the organisation's Scholarship and Mentoring Program.
"I'm honoured to accept the role of Co-Patron and continue supporting SAHOF's mission, especially through The Dawn Award, which celebrates the spirit of Australians who make a difference well beyond competition," Fraser stated. "I look forward to celebrating the 40th Anniversary Gala and the remarkable people who make our sporting nation what it is."
Memorable Moments and Family Celebrations
The red carpet saw numerous heartwarming family moments. AFL legend Chris Judd, inducted in 2022, attended with his mother Lisa Engel, while cricket hero Adam Gilchrist and swimming superstar Ian Thorpe - recently the victim of an alleged robbery at his home - were also spotted among the distinguished guests.
Formula One driver Oscar Piastri's family showed their support with his mother Nicole and sisters Mae Hattie and Edie all making appearances, despite Oscar's ongoing championship battle with three races remaining in the season.
Rugby league's "King" Wally Lewis cut a suave figure in a tuxedo, accompanied by his wife Lynda who wore a stunning blue gown. The couple's recent wedding had made headlines when Lewis's ex-wife Jacqueline Green and their three children were notably absent from the ceremony, amid speculation about family tensions following the 2021 confirmation of their separation.
Cameron Smith, reflecting on his induction after a glittering 19-season career comprising 430 matches for Melbourne Storm, expressed profound gratitude. "It is an incredible honour," Smith said. "One that I will forever hold with great pride. It's also a reminder of the people who supported me throughout my entire rugby league journey."
The Hewitt family had double cause for celebration, with former Wimbledon and US Open champion Lleyton announcing his comeback from retirement to partner with his son Cruz at the Challenger event in Sydney. While Cruz was competing elsewhere, Lleyton attended with his wife and daughter to mark his Hall of Fame induction.
"It's pretty surreal to be honest," Hewitt admitted. "When you're playing your professional career it's not something you think about at all or focus on, but over the years growing up in Australia we've had such a rich history... that I've had so many great role models and idols that I've looked up to, all there in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. So for me now to be inducted is an incredible honour."
