Russian Architect Stages Silent Ukraine Protest at Winter Olympics Opening

A Russian national living in Milan orchestrated a poignant, anonymous protest against the ongoing war in Ukraine during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games. Anastasia Kucherova, an architect who has resided in Italy for fourteen years, deliberately chose to carry the Ukrainian team's placard as she led their athletes into San Siro stadium.

Anonymous Protest with Deliberate Intent

Kucherova was one of ninety-two placard bearers, all concealed in long, hooded silver puffer coats and dark glasses to ensure complete anonymity. While country assignments were initially random, volunteers were later offered a choice, and Kucherova specifically selected Ukraine. Her Russian nationality remained undisclosed to the public as she guided the five Ukrainian athletes into the stadium, where they were met with resounding cheers that amplified her silent act of defiance.

"When you walk by the side of these people you realize they have every human right to feel hatred towards any Russian," Kucherova told The Associated Press in an interview on Monday. "Still, I think it's important to do even a small action to show them that maybe not all the people are thinking the same way."

Revealing Her Identity and Motivations

Kucherova first revealed her role to her 879 Instagram followers before speaking with the AP. For her, discussing this small act of resistance on the second anniversary of dissident Alexei Navalny's poisoning death serves as a reminder that the war continues, even as life elsewhere proceeds normally.

"Ukrainians don't have any possibility to avoid these thoughts or to ignore the existence of war. So it is their reality," she explained. "They keep loving each other, getting married or doing sports, coming to the Olympics. But all of this is happening against a devastating background."

Profound Connection Recognized

Without being informed of Kucherova's Russian origins, the Ukrainian athletes immediately recognized her background and addressed her in Russian. Kucherova interpreted this as evidence of "some profound connection" between Russians and Ukrainians that "obviously could live on if not for the war."

The Milan delegation included flag bearer Yelyzaveta Sydorko, a short track speedskater, and figure skater Kyrylo Marsak. Both athletes have fathers currently fighting on the front lines in a conflict nearing its fourth anniversary.

"There is literally no word you can say that can undo the harm that these people have already suffered, and there is no word that can come in close to forgiveness," Kucherova reflected.

Emotional Stadium Moment

Right before entering the stadium, Kucherova turned to the Ukrainian athletes and told them the entire stadium would give them a standing ovation. Though they appeared skeptical initially, when the cheers erupted, Kucherova described feeling as though the entire stadium was "recognizing their independence, recognizing their will for freedom, their courage in making it all the way to the Olympics."

She cried silently behind her glasses during this emotional moment. Kucherova hasn't visited Russia since 2018 but understands she is taking a significant risk by defying the regime.

"I have to be worried about this, and I'm supposed to be scared about this," she admitted. "And I cannot guarantee that me speaking out will not harm any people I know. But what I think is that if I, living in a democratic country and enjoying all the freedoms, if I am scared, this means that the regime has won."

Additional Symbolic Gesture

In a notable coincidence, Kucherova also held the placard for Denmark, which received a rousing ovation for that nation's resistance of U.S. threats to take over Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory.

"Yes, this is a coincidence, but I pondered over it," Kucherova remarked, acknowledging the additional layer of symbolism in her Olympic role.
