Iran Forced to Withdraw from Winter Paralympics as Lone Athlete Cannot Travel Safely

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) confirmed on Friday that Iran will not participate in the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games. This decision comes after the nation's sole athlete, Aboulfazl Khatibi Mianaei, was unable to secure safe passage to Italy due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Two-Time Paralympian Unable to Compete

Aboulfazl Khatibi Mianaei, a two-time Paralympian, had been scheduled by Iran's National Paralympic Committee to compete in two Para cross-country skiing medal events on March 10 and 11. The athlete previously represented Iran at the Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics, but will miss his third Games due to travel safety concerns.

IPC President Andrew Parsons expressed disappointment, stating: "We were informed by NPC Iran that safe passage to Milano Cortina 2026 was not possible, and, as a result, they would not be able to come to the Games. It is really disappointing for world sport and especially for Aboulfazl that he is unable to travel safely to compete at his third Paralympic Winter Games."

Extensive Efforts to Find Alternative Routes

Parsons further explained that since the conflict began, the IPC and the Milano Cortina 2026 Organising Committee had been working tirelessly behind the scenes with Iran's National Paralympic Committee and national ski federation to identify alternative travel routes for the Iranian delegation. However, these efforts proved unsuccessful.

"With the conflict ongoing across the Middle East, the risk to human life is too high," Parsons concluded, highlighting the grave safety concerns that ultimately prevented Iran's participation.

Impact on Opening Ceremony and Broader Boycotts

As a direct consequence of Iran's withdrawal, the nation's flag has been removed from the athlete parade scheduled for Friday's opening ceremony at the Arena di Verona. This travel disruption threatens to overshadow the ceremony's festivities.

Additionally, several other nations have announced their intention to boycott the event in protest at the return of Russian athletes. The UK government confirmed on Thursday that it would not send officials to the opening or closing ceremonies to show solidarity with Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.

The absence of Iran from the Winter Paralympics underscores the broader geopolitical tensions affecting international sporting events, with safety and political considerations increasingly influencing participation decisions.
