Menna Fitzpatrick Finishes Fifth in Final Paralympic Slalom, Eyes 2030 Games
Fitzpatrick Fifth in Slalom, Targets 2030 Paralympics

Menna Fitzpatrick, Britain's most decorated Winter Paralympian, concluded her participation at the Milan-Cortina Paralympics with a fifth-place finish in the women's para alpine skiing slalom event. This marked her final outing at the Games, as she now sets her sights on competing in the 2030 Paralympics in France.

A Challenging Build-Up and Resilient Performance

Fitzpatrick's journey to these Games was notably difficult, as she made the remarkable decision to forgo anterior cruciate ligament surgery in December to ensure her participation in a third Paralympics. Despite this setback, she delivered a solid performance in the slalom, clocking a time of one minute and 36.38 seconds.

Her overall campaign included sixth-place finishes in the giant slalom VI and Super G events, along with a ninth-place result in the combined alpine. The slalom performance, however, provided a high note to end on, with Fitzpatrick describing it as likely her best showing at the Games.

Looking Ahead to Future Competitions

When questioned about her future plans, Fitzpatrick expressed a clear intention to aim for the 2030 Paralympics in France. She told Channel 4, "Each cycle you lead up to the games and you have that end goal in mind. I do want to go to France if I can in 2030, so yeah I'll have a bit of time and then switch back into training."

As a six-time Paralympic medallist, including a gold in the slalom from 2018, Fitzpatrick emphasized the importance of resilience. She stated, "As an athlete, you've got to work with what you've got and every little bump in the way is good resilience training I would say. You just have to know deep down that I have the skill and I just need to get it out on race day."

Detailed Race Performance

In the slalom event, Fitzpatrick's performance was consistent across both runs. She secured fifth place in her first run with a time of 47.37 seconds, followed by a sixth-place finish in the second run at 48.30 seconds. This solid final outing will serve as a foundation as she begins preparations for the upcoming Games in the French Alps.

Fitzpatrick's ability to overcome physical challenges and maintain a competitive edge underscores her dedication to the sport, leaving fans optimistic about her prospects for the 2030 Paralympics.
