Arthur Fery and Katie Swan have made history at Wimbledon 2026 by becoming the first British players to advance to the second round. Fery, a 22-year-old wildcard, stunned 15th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory on Court 12. Swan, meanwhile, battled past 28th seed Anhelina Kalinina 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Court 18, marking her first win at Wimbledon since 2022.
Fery's Breakthrough Performance
Fery, ranked 198th in the world, displayed remarkable composure against Etcheverry, who had reached the French Open quarterfinals earlier this year. The British wildcard fired 15 aces and saved all four break points he faced. According to Fery, "I just tried to stay focused on my game plan. I knew he was a tough opponent, but I believed in my ability to win." This victory is the biggest of Fery's career and propels him into a second-round meeting with American Sebastian Korda.
Swan's Gritty Comeback
Katie Swan, 25, showed resilience after dropping the first set to Kalinina. The British No. 3, ranked 124th, broke Kalinina's serve five times and won 68% of points on her first serve. Swan said, "I never gave up, even when I was down. I just kept fighting and it paid off." She will face Czech qualifier Brenda Fruhvirtova in the next round.
British Success at Wimbledon 2026
The performances of Fery and Swan are a bright spot for British tennis, which has seen limited success at the All England Club in recent years. With several other British players still in the draw, including Cameron Norrie and Emma Raducanu, the home nation hopes to build on this momentum. Fery and Swan's victories also earned them £85,000 each in prize money, a significant boost for their careers.
