Matteo Berrettini showcased his grass-court prowess on Thursday, defeating the fiery Frenchman Arthur Fils 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to reach the third round of Wimbledon. The Italian, a former finalist at the All England Club in 2021, relied on his powerful serve and tactical acumen to subdue the 20-year-old Fils, who replaced the injured Frances Tiafoe in the draw.
Berrettini's Experience Proves Decisive
Berrettini, 28, won 82% of his first-serve points and fired 16 aces, never facing a break point. He broke Fils once in each set, capitalizing on the Frenchman's occasional lapses in concentration. "I knew it would be tough against Arthur. He's a great talent, but I trusted my game and stayed focused," Berrettini said after the match.
Fils Shows Promise Despite Defeat
Fils, ranked 37th, displayed flashes of brilliance, particularly with his forehand and net play. He saved four set points in the second-set tiebreak before Berrettini clinched it 7-5. The Frenchman, who reached the fourth round at Roland Garros last month, was hampered by 32 unforced errors. "I'm disappointed, but I learned a lot. Matteo is a champion on grass," Fils commented.
Next Up for Berrettini
Berrettini will face either Alexander Zverev or Marcos Giron in the next round. The Italian is aiming to replicate his 2021 run, where he lost in the final to Novak Djokovic. His victory over Fils marks his 20th win at Wimbledon, solidifying his reputation as one of the tour's elite grass-court players.
