US Skater Amber Glenn: Coming Out 'Set Me Free' Ahead of Olympic Medal Bid
Amber Glenn: Coming Out 'Set Me Free' Before Olympics

American figure skating star Amber Glenn has spoken candidly about how publicly embracing her identity as bisexual and pansexual profoundly liberated her, describing the experience as something that 'set me free'. This revelation comes just days before she competes for a medal at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, where she is set to make history.

A Champion's Journey to Self-Acceptance

The 26-year-old athlete recently secured her place in the record books by becoming the first American woman in over twenty years to clinch a third consecutive US national championship title. This remarkable achievement sets the stage for her Olympic campaign, where she will aim to end a long medal drought for US women in singles figure skating, a feat not accomplished since 2006.

Overcoming Mental Health Struggles

Glenn's path to the pinnacle of her sport has been far from straightforward. She has previously endured significant mental health challenges that necessitated a temporary step away from competitive skating. Reflecting on her journey, Glenn identifies a pivotal turning point that occurred in 2019, coinciding with her decision to openly share her sexuality with the world.

'It was something that did set me free,' Glenn explained in an interview with NBC. 'I was able to feel like I wasn’t being pressured into trying to fill someone else’s shoes.' She elaborated further on this transformation, stating last year: 'No matter how hard I tried, I just did not fit into the mold, and eventually I realized if I’m going to keep doing this, I want to at least do it as me... I’m not going to be at the top anyways, so I might as well do it as myself. And in doing so, I ended up making it to the top somehow.'

Making Olympic History

According to reports from Outsports, Glenn's participation in Milan Cortina will mark a significant milestone, as she is poised to become the first openly out woman to compete in figure skating at the Olympic Games. This historic moment underscores a broader shift towards greater visibility and inclusion within elite sports.

An Unexpected Global Spotlight

The skater initially believed her coming out story would attract minimal attention when she first discussed her sexuality with the Dallas Voice, a publication focusing on LGBTQ issues in Texas. 'I thought: "OK, this is my little baby step, and... barely anyone’s gonna see it,"' Glenn revealed. 'It was a local newspaper... yeah, it did not stay local. The next day it was international news.'

Confronting Fears and Breaking Stereotypes

Glenn admitted to harbouring concerns about how her sexuality might be perceived by key figures in the sport, including potential sponsors and even judging panels. 'I was scared that I’d be looked at as less feminine, less graceful or "Oh, are you the man in the relationship?"' she explained.

However, she reached a powerful realisation: 'But I realized: well, if we’re ever going to get past that worry, someone has to do it. Someone has to break that mold and break that stereotype in order for the next person who comes out not to be afraid of that because they saw that it didn’t affect me.'

Warm Reception Within the Sport

Contrary to her initial apprehensions, Glenn reports that she has not faced negative repercussions, either financially or in terms of her competitive performance. Instead, she describes being 'accepted with open arms' within the figure skating community. She thoughtfully added, 'And that’s not the case for all sports,' acknowledging the varied experiences of LGBTQ athletes across different disciplines.

As she prepares to take to the Olympic ice, Amber Glenn stands not only as a formidable competitor but also as a trailblazer whose personal journey of authenticity has become an integral part of her champion's story.
