Ahmedabad to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Centenary Year
Ahmedabad confirmed as 2030 Commonwealth Games host

The historic city of Ahmedabad in India has been officially selected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, securing the prestigious event for its centenary year.

A Host City Decided

Members at a General Assembly held in Glasgow gave their formal approval for Ahmedabad to stage the Games. The Indian candidate city, also widely known as Amdavad, triumphed in the selection process over its rival, the Nigerian capital Abuja.

The decision, announced on Wednesday 26 November 2025, places Ahmedabad at the heart of a major global sporting celebration.

Marking a Century of Sport

The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be a landmark occasion, commemorating 100 years since the very first event, then known as the British Empire Games, was held in Hamilton, Canada in 1930.

This will be the second time India has hosted the multi-sport event, having previously organised the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Future Challenges for the Games

Despite the celebratory news, significant questions remain about the long-term future of the Commonwealth Games. Concerns about the financial viability and the high costs associated with hosting continue to cast a shadow.

This declining interest from potential hosts was starkly illustrated when the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as the host for the 2026 Games, leaving the event's immediate future uncertain and highlighting the pressing need for a sustainable model.
