Max Verstappen Opens Up on F1 Future and Red Bull Commitment

Max Verstappen has provided a candid insight into his Formula 1 career trajectory, addressing retirement plans and his steadfast loyalty to the Red Bull Racing team. The Dutch driver, currently 28 years old, shared these reflections amidst ongoing speculation about a potential move to Mercedes, which he has firmly dismissed.

Verstappen's Promise to Dietrich Mateschitz

Verstappen revealed that he had a personal conversation with the late Red Bull co-founder, Dietrich Mateschitz, expressing a shared dream for his racing future. Mateschitz, who passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 78 three-and-a-half years ago, was assured by Verstappen that his ambition was to remain with Red Bull indefinitely. This commitment was made seven months before Verstappen signed his current contract, which extends through the 2028 season.

Verstappen stated to The Times: "I remember when Dietrich was still alive... I told him my dream - and his dream - was that I would stay here forever, as long as my career lasts. I'm very happy that before he passed away, I said that my intention is still to fulfil that dream, and so far that is going quite well."

Loyalty and Team Stability in Formula 1

In discussing his decision to stay with Red Bull, Verstappen emphasized the importance of loyalty and personal comfort within a team. He noted that drivers are not typically the stable factor in Formula 1, as personnel often move between teams. Verstappen takes pride in his long-term association with Red Bull, which began with their junior outfit, Toro Rosso, and has spanned 11 complete seasons out of his 13 years in the sport.

He explained: "I stayed loyal to the team for a long time; they know that loyalty, for me, is a very big thing, and that's not always a given in Formula 1, but that's how I operate. You always try to build the strongest team around you, but when you have a lot of success, it's normal that people get poached and people leave, that's how sport works."

Verstappen added that feeling able to be oneself within a team is crucial, especially after achieving significant success, including four consecutive drivers' championships. This personal connection outweighs mere performance considerations for him.

Retirement Considerations and Life Beyond Racing

Verstappen has recently been vocal about contemplating retirement from Formula 1. On the Up To Speed podcast, he indicated that he sees himself nearing the end of his racing career, partly due to new regulations that he feels do not encourage extending his tenure.

He remarked: "I definitely see myself nearing the end. I'd say the new regulations aren't helping to extend my Formula One career, but it doesn't matter; I'm happy with my trajectory. I can easily leave it behind; I have other projects."

Reflecting on life priorities, Verstappen highlighted the value of spending time with family and friends. He shared an experience from a skiing trip that reinforced his desire to appreciate life beyond the racetrack.

He elaborated: "Who cares when you're 60 or 70 if you won four or 10 titles? I'm getting older, and I prefer to spend time with my family before they're gone. It's something I've realised over time. I was recently skiing with some good friends and my family, and I realised how fantastic it was to spend several days together, appreciating life. I want to live my life; you only live once, and I don't want to spend 25 years driving a car. I want to appreciate what's out there. Maybe I sound dramatic, but I don't want to keep living just to race."

Current Season and Contract Details

The 2026 season marks Verstappen's 13th year in Formula 1 and his 11th full season with Red Bull. Despite losing his world champion status after securing four successive titles, he reaffirmed his commitment to the team last year, putting an end to months of speculation about a switch to Mercedes. His current contract ensures he remains with Red Bull through 2028, aligning with his promise to Mateschitz.
