Verstappen Fires Back at Brown with 'Chucky' Jibe After Qatar GP Win
Verstappen responds to Brown's horror movie jibe

Max Verstappen has delivered a sharp-witted response to McLaren CEO Zak Brown after a crucial victory at the Qatar Grand Prix kept his Formula 1 world championship hopes burning. The Dutch driver's win, capitalising on a strategic error from McLaren, sets up a nail-biting season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Horror Movie Jibe Sparks 'Chucky' Retort

Prior to the race in Qatar, Brown had likened Verstappen's late-season resurgence to a villain in a horror film, quipping he was "that guy in a horror movie, that right as you think he's not coming back, he's back". After taking the chequered flag, Verstappen was asked about the comments and replied with a grin, "He can call me Chucky!".

Verstappen acknowledged he found Brown's analogy amusing. "I saw it as well. I thought it was quite funny," he said. "From my side, I just focus on myself. I know that when I go in the car, I just try to do the best... that's the only thing I can control, right?" His reference is to the notorious killer doll from the Child's Play franchise, a fitting riposte in their psychological duel.

Strategic Masterstroke Turns the Tide

The race itself was a tale of divergent strategies. Starting from third on the grid, Verstappen passed Lando Norris at the start and then made the decisive move to pit on lap seven when the safety car was deployed. The McLaren duo of Norris and Oscar Piastri, however, stayed out on track, a decision that ultimately cost them dearly.

Verstappen was frank about his car's performance, admitting Red Bull did not have the pure pace of the McLaren. "Looking at pure pace, we were not on the same level as McLaren," he told Sky Sports. "But we made the right call, as most of the grid did, in boxing under the safety car. That almost gives you a free pit stop and that made the race for me."

The strategic blunder compounded a miserable fortnight for McLaren, coming just one week after both of their drivers were disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix for a technical regulation breach. Norris finished a frustrated fourth in Qatar, with Piastri managing second place.

Abu Dhabi Showdown: A Long Shot with Hope

Despite his superb back-to-back wins, the championship remains a steep challenge for Verstappen. He heads to the final round at the Yas Marina Circuit 12 points behind championship leader Lando Norris. This marks a stunning comeback from a 104-point deficit to then-leader Oscar Piastri at the end of August.

The Dutchman is realistic about his chances but draws confidence from the unpredictable nature of Grand Prix racing. "I think on pure pace it will be tough," Verstappen conceded. "But a race like today also shows that it's not always straightforward, a Grand Prix, and a lot of things can happen. So I'm probably relying a little bit on that."

The stage is now set for a thrilling climax to the 2025 Formula 1 season, with the destiny of the Drivers' Championship to be decided under the lights in Abu Dhabi.
