Max Verstappen Threatens F1 Exit Over 2026 Rule Changes
Verstappen may quit F1 if 2026 rules aren't 'fun'

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has issued a stark warning that he is prepared to walk away from the sport entirely if upcoming technical regulation changes fail to meet his expectations.

The 'Fun' Factor: Verstappen's Ultimatum

Despite being under contract with the Red Bull team until the conclusion of the 2028 season, the four-time champion has declared that his continued participation hinges on the new rules set for introduction in 2026. Speaking to PA media ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, Verstappen was unequivocal about his stance.

"My contract runs until 2028, but it will depend on the new rules in 2026, and if they are nice and fun," Verstappen stated. "If they are not fun, then I don't really see myself hanging around."

This revelation adds a new dimension to the speculation surrounding his future, which throughout the 2025 season had largely focused on a potential move to Mercedes. Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, was unable to secure Verstappen for 2026, and now may never get the opportunity, should the Dutchman decide to retire.

Life Beyond the F1 Paddock

Verstappen's comments highlight a driver who does not feel bound by the pursuit of statistical greatness. He openly admitted that equalling Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher's record of seven world titles is not a primary motivation.

"Winning seven titles is not on my mind," he confessed. "I know that there are three more years after this one, so it could be possible, but it is not something I need to do before I leave the sport. I can leave the sport easily tomorrow."

He elaborated on his passions outside of Formula 1, citing a desire to explore other racing categories, spend more time with his family, and live by his own schedule. Crucially, he emphasised that any departure would be permanent. "In my mind, I know if I close the chapter, it is closed. I don't see myself stopping and coming back. Once I stop, I really stop."

Endurance Racing Ambitions Take Shape

Verstappen's gaze is already fixed on new challenges in the world of motorsport. After obtaining the required DMSB Permit A on his Nürburgring Nordschleife debut this year, he has expressed a firm interest in competing in the Nürburgring 24 Hours race in 2026.

His ambitions extend further, with a confirmed desire to race at the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans. "Le Mans, I definitely would like to do," he said last year. "I've been there already when my dad used to race, and the atmosphere is amazing. It's endurance, so many people, driving through the night, sunrise - I think it's really cool."

He has even begun plotting a potential dream team, revealing discussions with two-time F1 champion and friend Fernando Alonso. "I've been speaking to Fernando about it," Verstappen explained. "He said he would only want to do it with me again. That would be really cool."

The Dutchman did, however, note one logistical hurdle: his weight. With no minimum driver weight at Le Mans, he joked about needing lighter teammates to compensate. "Fernando is quite light, so it would be quite good, but then we need to find another one – I need to have a look!"
